A season to give

A season to give

This is a wonderful time of year. – We moved quickly through Veterans Day honoring the sacrifice of so many, to Thanksgiving where we gave thanks for the blessings we have, and now move on to the Christmas holiday season with so many multi-cultural celebrations all based on hope and sharing. This is traditionally considered a festive and happy time of year for most, but for many, not so much. I would ask that we remember those less fortunate and do what we can to help.

In the nonprofit world, we talk about the “Three T’s” of Time, Talent, and Treasure that are important to helping our organizations meet the missions that we have set for ourselves. There are many organizations out there and the need is great. I would urge all of our readers to consider how you can give of yourself in the “Three T’s” to help others during this time of the year. I know that our students and faculty at CGSC are busy getting ready for comprehensive exams, getting ready for master’s degree course finals, as well as all of the family things that come with Christmas. But I would also ask you each to consider how you can help others and give of your time, talent, and/or treasure to make this a better season for all.

On a personal note, I have been ringing bells for the Salvation Army as a way of helping those less fortunate and recently, I was joined by our trustee Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Stan Cherrie. He is a regular bell ringer, a driver for Meals On Wheels, a coordinator for the Walk for the Cure, and other activities that help the community. I have taken a great lesson from him, as well as our board of trustees, who not only give willingly of their time, talent, and treasure to support the CGSC Foundation, but also reach out to others less fortunate in their communities. I wish I could list all of our trustees’ efforts to give of themselves but suffice to say they are an amazing group of people. These are all an example of the good that we all can do when we give to causes greater than ourselves.

I hope that each of you take some time to reflect and then get out there to help others during this season of joy and giving. Be a volunteer! And to those of you that do give freely of your precious time, talent, and treasure, thank you!
