Three generations of CGSC Foundation chairmen were present at the Aug. 29-30, 2017 board meeting: Chairman Emeritus/Founding Chairman Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Robert Arter; outgoing Chairman/Chairman Emeritus Lt. Gen. (Ret.) John Miller; and Mike Hockley, newly elected chairman of the board.

On the first day of the meeting, the board conducted its normal business meeting, discussing overall financial and administrative issues. Highlights of this first day included the retirement of Foundation Chairman Lt. Gen. (Ret.) John Miller and the election of Foundation President Mike Hockley as chairman of the Foundation. Miller delivered his farewell remarks to the board, recognizing several Foundation milestones and thanking the trustees and the staff. (See Lt. Gen. Miller’s farewell remarks in the Spring 2017 edition of the Foundation News.)

New trustees were welcomed to their first board meeting: Maj. Gen. Tim Orr, The Adjutant General, Iowa; Scott Smith, former executive with HNTB, a Kansas City engineering firm; and John Wilson, a Navy veteran and president of the Ottawa Land & Cattle Co. Inc. Col. (Ret.) Norma Bradford was also elected as a new board member. Additionally, the board unanimously elected three emeritus trustees: Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Miller; Col. (Ret.) Daniel McGowan (who is also the Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army for Eastern Iowa); and Mr. Skip Palmer.

Also on day one of the meeting Trustee Katie Ervin provided a brief overview of a proposed leadership initiative for the Foundation. Also, Dr. Shannon French, the Gen. Hugh Shelton Distinguished Visiting Chair for Ethics (a program sponsored by the Foundation through a grant from the Perot Foundation), also provided an overview of her activities in this new academic year.

At the end of day one the trustees gathered for a dinner at a local winery.

On day two of the meeting, trustees gathered for a group photo followed by a “retreat” in which the board was led by Ms. Karen Wulfkuhle, an outside facilitator, in discussing Foundation issues and recommendations for improvement. The meeting concluded with committee meetings and reports to the full board.
