The U.S. Army Command and General Staff College’s Department of Joint, Interagency and Multinational Operations (DJIMO) and the CGSC Foundation cohosted a National Security Roundtable program Nov. 29-30, 2016 at the Lewis and Clark Center on Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

The program kicked off Nov. 29 with a welcome by CGSC Foundation CEO Doug Tystad who entertained the group with an impromptu history lesson and quiz about the Army’s five 5-star generals. After Tystad’s welcome, the group moved to the Arnold Conference Room where Brig. Gen. Eugene (Gene) J. LeBoeuf, Army University’s Deputy Commanding General and Executive Vice Provost for Academics Affairs, provided the group with an overview of Army University and Army leader development. After LeBoeuf’s presentation, Mr. Jeff LaMoe, CGSC Chief of Staff, provided the roundtable participants with some history of CGSC and an overview of Army professional education with special emphasis on the College.

After the short presentations, the participants and their student escorts mingled in a reception in the atrium area of the Lewis and Clark Center.

The 14 participants in this roundtable program are a mix of civilians from various industries and professions, with a few of them having military experience. Regardless, the NSRT program helps foster a mutual understanding between the business community and the Army and the College, develops a greater awareness and appreciation for the competence of the students and faculty, highlights the role that Fort Leavenworth and the College play in the education of the Army, other services and the international community, and exposes the officer-students to a broader spectrum of thoughts and ideas.

On Wednesday, Nov. 30, the group participated in discussion panels led by the DJIMO faculty. They also had an opportunity to visit CGSC classrooms with their student escorts to see first-hand the education process at the College.

The first discussion panel entitled “Persistent Instabilities in the Middle East and North Africa was led by DJIMO professors Gary Hobin, Jeff Vordermark, John Cary and Russ Crumrine. The second panel was entitled “Russian Agression and Issues in the South China Sea” and was led by DJIMO professors Mark Wilcox and Dr. John Modinger. Both panels drove a series of questions from the participants and some lively discussion and debate about the answers.
