First Command Financial Services is selected as the CGSC Foundation Corporate Partner for January 2018.
“First Command is a great partner of the CGSC Foundation,” said Col. (Ret.) Roderick M. Cox, the CGSC Foundation’s Simons Center Program Director. “They are the sole sponsor of the highly successful Command and General Staff School and the Simons Center co-sponsored InterAgency Brown-Bag Lecture Series that brings in senior officials from across all agencies and levels of government to engage in dialogue with both CGSC students and faculty as well as other government employees throughout the KC metro area.
Cox added that First Command is also a contributing sponsor of both the Vietnam War Commemoration Lecture Series and the General of the Armies John J. Pershing Great War Centennial Series, which serve to educate both the CGSC community as well as the greater KC community on the international significance of these wars and the impact they had on our nation. Cox said First Command also intends to sponsor a golf tournament in the spring, which will provide funding for the CGSC Foundation scholarship program.
“Our local First Command contact is retired Air Force Col. Curt Ross, but we definitely have to recognize their district advisor Lonnie Bowman and Mr. Esau Williamson, senior vice president, who have provided the approvals to support our programs,” Cox said. “We are especially proud that Williamson, a senior member of the First Command team, believes in the mission and the value of the CGSC Foundation.”
“We look forward to a long and expanding partnership with First Command,” said Foundation CEO Doug Tystad. “They have committed to lending their brand and financial resources to enhancing, and making possible, many of the Foundation’s academic and family support programs.”
First Command’s mission – coaching those who serve in their pursuit of financial security – was begun in the 1950s, when Air Force Lt. Col. Carroll Payne had the occasion to work closely with the families of several crew members killed in a training flight. Saddened by the survivors’ financial difficulties, Lt. Col. Payne began thinking about how he might be able to help other military families avoid the same fate. In 1958, he began laying the groundwork for the company that would become First Command and First Command Financial Advisors have been shaping positive financial behaviors through face-to-face coaching with hundreds of thousands of client families ever since.
