The national headquarters of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) is selected as the CGSC Foundation Corporate Partner for April 2018.

The VFW has come online in recent months as one of the sponsors of two of the Foundation’s lecture series – the “Vietnam War Commemoration Lecture Series” and the General of the Armies John J. Pershing Great War Centennial Series” – and in January 2018, the VFW presented a donation to endow the General George C. Marshall award that is presented to the top U.S. military student in each graduating class of the Command and General Staff Officers Course (CGSOC).

When he visited Fort Leavenworth and presented the endowment check to the Foundation for the Marshall Award, Lynn Rolf, III, director of programs for the VFW, stated, “The VFW stands behind our warriors and anyway we can step up and show support of their professional development we are 100 percent all in. Our future military leaders are going to define the country, so this small gesture is the least the Veterans of Foreign Wars can do.”

According to Foundation President/CEO Doug Tystad, the CGSC Foundation sponsors more than 60 percent of all the academic awards for each SAMS and CGSC graduating class, in addition to recognition for the CGSC Educators of the Year and recognition for Emeritus Faculty on their retirement. He added that the VFW’s endowment of the Marshall Award, one of the primary awards for each class, enables the Foundation to continue the tradition of recognizing academic excellence at CGSC. The Foundation will manage the endowment, which will fund the award in perpetuity.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States is a nonprofit veterans service organization comprised of eligible veterans and military service members from the active, guard and reserve forces. The VFW was founded in 1914 from two separate organizations that began in 1898/99 and was chartered by Congress in 1936. The VFW’s stated mission is “to foster camaraderie among United States veterans of overseas conflicts. To serve our veterans, the military and our communities. To advocate on behalf of all veterans.” For more information visit www.vfw.org.

The CGSC Foundation is proud to spotlight the Veterans of Foreign Wars for their outstanding support of the Foundation and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.
