The public is invited to the sixth lecture in the Vietnam War Commemoration Lecture Series scheduled for April 19 at 6 p.m. in the Riverfront Community Center (123 S Esplanade St.) in downtown Leavenworth, Kansas. A reception sponsored by the CGSC Foundation will begin at 5:30 p.m.
This sixth lecture in the series is entitled “Stories of a New Army Nurse” and will be presented by Susan Backs, a retired Army nurse who spent her first tour of duty in Vietnam taking care of Soldiers.
This lecture series is presented by CGSC’s Department of Military History, U.S. Army Garrison Fort Leavenworth and supported by the CGSC Foundation and the Henry Leavenworth Chapter of AUSA.
Susan Backs is a retired Army nurse who served 23 years on active duty. She was initially assigned to duty at the 24th Evacuation Hospital in Long Binh, Vietnam from 1970 to 1971, as a staff nurse in a 25-bed POW unit and 25-bed orthopedic/gentourinary unit. She provided direct patient care and supervised paraprofessionals.
