CGSC Foundation celebrates 5th Anniversary

CGSC Foundation celebrates 5th Anniversary

January 26, 2011 marks the fifth anniversary of the Command and General Staff College Foundation.

The CGSC Foundation was started five years ago to  support the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC) in educating leaders for the 21st century in the following six mission areas:

  • Enrich the College’s academic environment
  • Foster a strong relationship between the military and the private sector
  • Enhance the institution’s research activities
  • Promote leader development
  • Encourage excellence in the faculty and student body
  • Maintain contact with alumni

CGSC was the only military staff or service college that did not have a charitable education foundation supporting the college.

The CGSC Foundation is the fastest growing military service college foundation in history.  From the outset the Foundation leadership has been dedicated to benchmarking best practices and getting the CGSC Foundation started on the right foot.

The CGSC Foundation has had several “firsts” in its short history:

  • Our Foundation established the first cosponsored activity between the CGSC and a private organization.
  • The $6.2 million gift from Mr. Ross Perot is the largest single personal gift ever given to a Staff or War College foundation in history.
  • Our Foundation established the first privately funded academic chair in the history of CGSC.
  • We established a CGSC Foundation Press to support scholarship at GCSC.
  • We now operate a fully funded research center that supports the College and U.S. Government departments and agencies.
  • We received a congressionally directed grant to help develop a Masters Degree curriculum for Homeland Security.
  • The foundation has had the congress pass legislation and the president has signed into law a bill providing for the minting of commemorative coins in support of the foundation.

Additionally, in just five short years, the foundation has supported the college with more than $700,000 expended on programs that include:

  • General Colin Powell Lecture Series
  • General Hugh Shelton Chair in Ethics
  • Ethics Symposium – 3 year series
  • Col. Arthur D. Simons Center for the Study of Interagency Cooperation
  • National Security Roundtable – twice annually
  • Kansas City Library Outreach Program
  • Support of the Comprehensive Soldier Fitness program
  • CGSC Foundation Press
  • Harvard Business School Case Method Seminar
  • Awards for excellence for faculty and students
  • Research support for students and faculty
  • Family support programs for spouses and children of students attending the college.

We want to thank all those who have contributed to the CGSC Foundation since its inception and we look forward to supporting the development of leaders for the nation for years to come.
