Fort Leavenworth kids ‘check-out' their library - Command and General Staff College Foundation, Inc.

The CGSC Foundation sponsored the “Check-out Your Library” Back-to-School Book Giveaway at the Ike Skelton Combined Arms Research Library (CARL), held Aug. 1, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

The event kicked-off with tables piled high with children’s and young adults’ books, and every child that attended left with a bag full of free books. Library staff members manned the craft station in the children’s section, and also put together a scavenger hunt to help children get acquainted with the library. Foundation staff assisted families entering to win the door prizes, and library staff helped families understand and navigate the library.

The event was well-received by the Fort Leavenworth community, many of whom only recently arrived for the Command and General Staff Officer Course (CGSOC) at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.

“Events like this mean we get to meet new people… this is absolutely something that we need…. meeting new people and getting to know the new base,” said Mariana, a member of the CGSOC class of 2026.

Some parents remarked on how events like “Check-out Your Library” and CARL’s regular programs encourage a love of reading and learning. “I’m really grateful that we get to have opportunities like this to foster those interests… This is our second year here [at Fort Leavenworth]. We love it here. It’s been a great experience so far,” said Stephanie, a military spouse and mother of three.

“It’s wonderful to be able to have the opportunity to take five kids here – to say the least of all different ages – and for them to be able to pick something special for themselves… it’s really amazing to have that opportunity,” said Shanna, a military spouse of 15 years and mother of five.

“This event supports Soldiers and families during their time here,” said Foundation President/CEO Lora Morgan. “It connects them with the library’s programs and shows we’re here to make their transition easier,” Morgan said. “We’re fortunate to have donors and partners who help make this possible. Without their support we simply wouldn’t have the resources to help host an event like this.”

The “Check-out Your Library” Back-to-School Book Giveaway was sponsored by CGSC Foundation with support from The Kansas City Royals Foundation, The Penworthy Company, Arcadia Publishing, Rainy Day Books, and the Rotary Club of Overland Park.
