Making sense of China focus of latest ARNSF

The CGSC Foundation’s Simons Center hosted an Arter-Rowland National Security Forum luncheon event on March 20, 2025, at the at the Carriage Club in Kansas City. The event featured a presentation on China by U.S. Army Foreign Area Officer Lt. Col. Jason Halub.

ARNSF program leader Bob Ulin kicked off the Forum welcoming the ARNSF members and their guests. After lunch, he introduced Halub.

In his presentation, Halub explored three questions: What is China? What does China want? And what does this mean for the United States? His goal in exploring these questions was to provide Forum members with insights into how China views itself and the world, why Xi Jinping is attempting to lead China down a path towards “national rejuvenation,” and the challenges and opportunities this presents for the United States and its allies and partners.

During his presentation Halub also touched on China’s history and further posed questions and discussion on how to manage competition, trade and security affairs with China.

After the presentation and a question and answer period, Ulin presented Halub with a challenge coin and Foundation/Simons Center coffee mug in appreciation for his time with the Forum. Ulin also provided a snapshot of future ARNSF gatherings.

Lt. Col. Jason Halub is a U.S. Army Foreign Area Officer currently attending the Advanced Strategic Leadership Studies Program, a U.S. Army War College-equivalent course at the School of Advanced Military Studies in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He has served in several assignments focusing on the Indo-Pacific region, including platoon leader and assistant operations officer for a combined arms battalion in South Korea, assistant professor of East Asian and Military History at the United States Military Academy, China Desk Officer at the Joint Staff J-5, senior China analyst and chief of the Political and Economic Analysis Section at the United States Forces Korea (USFK) J-2, and the deputy chief of the Joint U.S. Military Affairs Group-Korea, U.S. Embassy Seoul. Halub has lived and traveled extensively throughout China and the Indo-Pacific region. He also received his doctorate in history from Georgetown University where he focused on the role of popular culture in the development of modern Chinese nationalism.
