Chairman
Maj. Gen. Christopher P. Hughes, U.S. Army, Ret., was elected as chair of the CGSC Foundation Board of Trustees on Oct. 11, 2023.
Among many other duties he had over a 35-year Army career, Hughes notably served as deputy commandant of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College from Oct. 2013 to June 2015. In that role he was the co-founder and first provost of Army University.
Hughes last assignment before retirement was as commanding general of the U.S. Army Cadet Command and Fort Knox from May 2016-May 2018. He retired from the Army in July 2018.
After his military retirement, Hughes served as a Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army for Iowa (West) from 2018-2020. He also founded his own business – Northwest Consulting-M&C, LLC – in 2018, and more recently “The Way Forward: Executive Coaching” in 2023. He is currently a doctoral student pursuing an interdisciplinary leadership degree at Creighton University.
Hughes’ military assignments included the 4th Infantry Division, two tours with the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), the 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment and the Joint Readiness Training Center. He also served in the Pacific as a war planner for U.S. Army Pacific Command (USARPAC) and with the Deployable Joint Task Force Augmentation Cell at U.S. Pacific Command (USPACOM).
His key troop leading assignments included battalion and brigade operations officer duty with the 25th Infantry Division (Light); commander of 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division; commander of Joint Task Force Bravo in Honduras; and as the deputy commanding general (DCG) (Maneuver and Support) for the 3rd Infantry Division; and as the DCG Operations for Regional Command South, Afghanistan.
Hughes’ key military staff assignments included executive officer to the Secretary of the Army; chief of the Army Liaison Division to the U.S. House of Representatives, Washington D.C.; operations officer for the Army Initiatives Group G-3/5/7; and as an operations officer for the J34 Combating Terrorism Directorate, Joint Staff, Washington D.C., where he served as the investigating officer for the USS Cole Commission; and as the chief of Army Current Operations G-3/5/7 in the Pentagon.
Hughes’ primary awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal (two awards), Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (three awards), Bronze Star Medal (two awards), Defense Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Meritorious Service Medal (seven awards), the Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, Ranger Tab, Master Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Joint Staff Identification Badge, Army Staff Badge and numerous foreign Airborne Wings. He is also a published author and winner of the 2008 Army Historical Foundation’s Distinguished Writing Award for Excellence for his book entitled War on Two Fronts: An Infantry Commander’s War in Iraq and the Pentagon.
A native of Red Oak, Iowa, Hughes has a B.S. in Political Science from Northwest Missouri State University, an
M.A. in Business Management from Webster University, an M.S. in National Strategic Studies from the National Defense University and has earned an Honorary Doctorate of Laws degree from Northwest Missouri State University. His military education includes the Infantry Officer Basic Course, Infantry Officer Advanced Course, Combined Arms Services Staff School, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and the Armed Forces Staff College. Hughes is also a distinguished graduate of the National War College.
Hughes is a Distinguished Member and Honorary Colonel of the 327th Parachute Infantry Regiment; a life member of ROCKS (he was selected 2017 ROCK of the Year); and a life member of the Association of the U.S. Army (AUSA). He was selected as 2016 National Merit Award Winner Phi Sigma Kappa; honored as the 2017 Citizen of the Year by the National Association of Black Broadcasters of America; selected as the 2013 Northwest Missouri State University Distinguished Alumni of the year; and was inducted into the Army ROTC Hall of Fame in 2022.
Hughes and his wife Marguerite reside in Red Oak, Iowa and have three children and six grandchildren.

Brian Weaver has served on the CGSC Foundation Board of Trustees since September 2024. He was elected as 1st Vice Chair in September 2025.
Weaver is chairman and CEO of Torch.AI, a company he founded in 2017. He has more than 20 years of experience leading mission driven, high growth, technology focused companies.
Weaver is also the current president and chairman of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) Kansas City chapter. He has a Top Secret / Sensitive Compartmentalized Information (TS/SCI) clearance with the U.S. Department of Defense.
In May 2025, Weaver delivered the commencement speech at his alma mater, Northwest Missouri State University, where he earned a degree in communications and philosophy. He has raced numerous Ironman competitions at an elite amateur level in the U.S. and Europe, ranking as high as No. 1 in the world for the class. He lives in Kansas City with his wife of 25 years and two teenage daughters. He maintains a secondary residence in Arlington, Virginia.

Pete Brownell served on the CGSC Foundation Board of Trustees from 2012 to 2015 and rejoined the board in 2021. He was elected as the Foundation’s Regional Vice Chair (Central) in 2022 and was elected to the secretary position in September 2025.
Brownell is the chairman of the board of Brownells, a supplier of firearm accessories, ammunition and supplies, based in Grinnell, Iowa. He is also chairman of the board and CEO of Brownell’s parent company, 2nd Adventure Group.
Brownell earned his bachelor’s in administration and marketing and his MBA from the University of Iowa.

Ambassador (Ret.) Mary Carlin Yates has served on the CGSC Foundation Board of Trustees since September 2023 as the Regional Vice Chair (Pacific).
Yates was a Foreign Service Officer at the U.S. State Department and was one of two deputy commanders of the United States Africa Command until June 2009. She retired in September 2011 after 31 years. Her two final assignments were as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for African Affairs at the National Security Council (NSC) of the White House from January 2011- August 2011 and as the Senior Advisor for Strategic Planning and Special Assistant to the President from June 2009 – December 2010. Despite her retirement, she served as Chargé d’Affaires in Khartoum, Sudan through February 2012.
Yates earned her bachelor’s in English from Oregon State University and earned a Master’s in Comparative East West Humanities from New York University, where she pursued her doctoral studies in Asian Affairs.
She served as U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Burundi from 1999 until June 2002, and as U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Ghana from November 2002 to 2005.
Yates was named on September 28, 2008, as the Deputy to the Commander for Civil-Military Activities, United States Africa Command (USAFRICOM), headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany where she served most recently as the Principal Advisor to the Commander, United States European Command (USEUCOM). She has earned two State Department Superior Honor Awards and two Meritorious Honor Awards.
Her husband, John M. Yates, is U.S. Special Envoy to Somalia.

Leslie M. Schweitzer has served on the CGSC Foundation Board of Trustees since August 2019. She was elected Regional Vice Chair (Eastern) in September 2024.
Schweitzer is the founder and chair of the Friends of the American University of Afghanistan. Her career in international business and development spans over four decades. She pioneered American business in China in the 70’s, and was instrumental in constructing the International Center for Afghan Women’s Economic Development. Leslie received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degree from the American University of Afghanistan.

Farhad Azima has served on the CGSC Foundation Board of Trustees since September 2018. He was elected as Regional Vice Chair (International) in September 2024.
Azima is the retired chairman of ALG Transportation. In his aviation career he conducted extensive business in the Middle East. He was recognized by the United States Air Force for his exceptional services to America during the build-up to and execution of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, and was awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor in 1998.

Lora was selected as President/CEO on Feb. 12, 2024, after serving as Interim President/CEO since Aug. 17, 2023. Prior to that position she served as the Foundation’s Director of Operations since November 2018.
As the spouse of an Army officer for more than 24 years, Lora has extensive experience raising her own family in the Army and working with military families and communities. A native Missourian, Lora holds a bachelor’s in business management from the University of Central Missouri. She has worked in school systems in Georgia and Kansas and also has more than five year’s experience in the financial services industry.

Terry Lillis has served on the CGSC Foundation Board of Trustees since Aug. 7, 2018 and was elected treasurer Aug. 20, 2020.
Lillis retired in 2017 as executive vice president and chief financial officer with the Principal Financial Group in Des Moines, Iowa. After serving in the U.S. Army in the Republic of Korea, Terry received a bachelor’s degree from Simpson College. He also received a master’s degree in actuarial science from the University of Iowa. He is a member of both the American Academy of Actuaries and the Society of Actuaries.

Rolf Snyder has served on the CGSC Foundation Board of Trustees since June 2010 and was elected as the Foundation’s Legal Advisor in September 2022.
Snyder is the German Consul for Kansas and Missouri and, as such, represents the Federal Republic of Germany for his areas of jurisdiction. He is also the president of Real Estate Corporation, Inc. and works extensively with various nonprofits around the country. Snyder’s practice focuses primarily on businesses and not for profit organizations.
Snyder received his MBA and law degree from the University of Kansas and his MIM from ESC Clermont Ferrand, France.

Stephenie Cole assumed role of CGSC Foundation director of operations April 14, 2025, bringing a diverse background in military protocol, family readiness, and operational coordination. Prior to joining the Foundation, she served as a protocol officer for the U.S. Army Combined Arms Center, where she managed official functions and supported senior military leadership in high-profile engagements.
A devoted military spouse for 22 years, Stephenie has been deeply embedded in the military community, supporting service members and families across a range of assignments. She is the proud mother of two daughters and has firsthand experience navigating the demands of military life both stateside and abroad. While stationed overseas, she served as a TRICARE Overseas Program beneficiary floater, assisting families with critical healthcare access, and as a readiness coordinator for the Grafenwoehr Dental Clinic, where she ensured unit and family preparedness through strategic support and outreach.
Stephenie’s unique combination of operational expertise and heartfelt advocacy for military families fuels her work at the CGSC Foundation. She is committed to supporting the Foundation’s mission to enrich the educational experience of students at the Command and General Staff College and to honor the service and sacrifices of military families.

Simons Center Director
John serves as the Deputy Director and Senior Research Fellow for the Simons Center. John served in the U.S. Army for more than 20 years in the Air Defense Artillery. After retiring from military service in 2007, he has led numerous analytical and organizational improvement efforts for the private sector, government, and military organizations. In 2015, he cofounded Morris, Nelson & Associates and serves as its chief executive officer. For the past several years, he has worked with several interagency organizations, law enforcement agencies at the federal, state, and local levels as well as non-profit organizations combatting Transnational Organized Crime. He joined the Simons Center in March 2021.

Elizabeth assists the director of operations with Foundation programs, helps operate the Gift Shops, and assists the director of development with donor database management. Having served with the Foundation since June 2011, Elizabeth is the longest serving Foundation employee. She has extensive editing and publication experience and is an Army brat and graduate of University of Saint Mary in Leavenworth with a bachelor’s in art and a minor in English.

Mark performs the duties of Foundation Director of Communications on a contractual basis from MHW Public Relations & Communications. Mark is a CGSC graduate (Class of ’98) and has an extensive background in public relations and strategic communications with the Army and the private sector. He has worked with the Foundation since 2005, creating and managing web and print design and content, including managing editor and layout/design duties for the Foundation News magazine and editing/layout/design for the InterAgency Journal, as well as other Foundation and Simons Center products. He also develops and executes communications strategies and tactics for business operations, programs, and events. He holds a bachelor’s in English/Technical Writing from Western Carolina University and a master’s in Journalism/Public Relations from Marshall University.
