CGSC Foundation receives $100,000 gift from noted entrepreneur

Hyrum Smith, the founder of the industry leading time management solutions company Franklin-Quest and current president of The Galileo Initiative, has pledged a $100,000 gift to the Command and General Staff College Foundation as a means to demonstrate that he is committed to the Foundation’s success.“I want to let all my fellow trustees know how important I believe the CGSC Foundation’s work is,” said Smith in a speech to the Foundation board of trustees and their guests during a holiday reception. “History has shown that a society that ceases to care about its own defense is one that ultimately ceases to exist at all. I believe that the Foundation’s purpose of supporting CGSC is key to our national security and this is my way of demonstrating that belief.”

Smith said he would provide the gift in $20,000 increments over five years with the first $20,000 being donated in March 2007.

“This is a significant commitment from a great individual and a great leader himself,” said Bob Ulin, CGSCF Chief Executive Officer. “We knew Hyrum was a great addition to our board of trustees. He loves the Army and believes that contributing to the development of our officer corps will help ensure the security of our country. This gift will help the Foundation support and raise public awareness about the Command and General Staff College’s mission to educate our military leaders.”

Since 1881, the Command and General Staff College has produced some of the nation’s foremost leaders including generals such as Eisenhower, Marshall, Vuono, Sullivan, McCaffrey and Powell. Additionally, more than 7,000 international officers have attended the College including the current President of Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim country and the current King of Bahrain. As the U.S. Army’s lead agent for leader development, the College is renowned in the academic study of leadership and the profession of arms.

The CGSC Foundation was established December 28, 2005 as a tax-exempt, non-profit private corporation. Programs supported by the Foundation include awards for the students and faculty, support for symposia, conferences, lectures, and community outreach activities that help connect the American people to their Army.
