The CGSC Foundation provided material and volunteer support for the “Check out your library” event at the Ike Skelton Combined Arms Research Library (CARL) Aug. 5, 2024, from 2-4 p.m.
Every child that attended got to pick out a free book. Library staff members also put together a scavenger hunt that required the kids to explore the library searching for clues that they used to complete word puzzles. CARL Circulation Department Head Sierra Hochstatter led story time during which the book “Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed” was a big hit. Throughout the event, Foundation Program Assistant Elizabeth Hill manned the popcorn machine providing popcorn and water to all, while Foundation Director of Operations Laurie Morgado helped families enter the Foundation’s free drawing for a holiday ornament or a book set. Library staff were also on hand to help families understand and navigate the library.
“This event provides us with an opportunity to support Soldiers and families, which is part of our mission,” said Foundation President/CEO Lora Morgan. “It helps families understand the library is for the community, not just an academic resource for CGSC students. We provide the free books and snacks and think it’s a great way to continue our support for the CARL youth reading programs.”
Morgan also said the turnout this year was as good or better than last year’s event.
“We had a great turnout last year,” Morgan said, “and we’re fortunate to have donors who help make this possible. Without their support we simply wouldn’t have the resources to help host an event like this.”
