CGSC Foundation, K-State, U.S. Army CGSC conduct Homeland Security Symposium

A curriculum program addressing homeland security and emergency management issues will soon be unveiled, thanks to a collaborative effort between the Army’s Command and General Staff College and Kansas State University.

The Command and General Staff College Foundation, Inc., and Kansas State University in support of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College will host a Homeland Security Symposium, March 15, 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Lewis and Clark Center, to review the program and participate in discussions about homeland security issues. Feedback from homeland security investors – from academics to first responders, all levels of government to private companies – will be used to tweak the final touches before the curriculum goes public, according to organizers.

K-State and CGSC recognized a need for better access to graduate programs that address homeland security and emergency management issues in 2008. These education partners sponsored the Homeland Security Educational Needs Analysis Workshop that year in which the same stakeholders teamed up to provide the content that was used to mold a program for educating, training and maintaining – a homeland security graduate certificate program aligned to the needs of regional security experts.  The CGSC Foundation assisted in that initial effort.  Since that time, the CGSC Foundation secured a non-competitive, Congressionally-directed grant in the amount of $250,000 to enable curriculum and course development related to a Homeland Security (HLS) education program.

The upcoming symposium will be the first chance for CGSC to see what the K-State program will look like, and organizers hope attendees share their professional experiences to help finalize the curriculum. They also hope it will encourage conversations among regional homeland security experts about critical topics.

The morning of the symposium, CGSC will present a version that is being taught to mid-career level military officers here and K-State will present their proposed version.

Attendees will break off into small groups in the afternoon to discuss topics such as cyber, domestic and biological threats, and support roles when disaster hits.

This event is not open to the public due to limited space, but media are invited to attend. An event schedule is available upon request.
