Jewish Community Center reps tour CGSC, focus on art

On Aug. 16, representatives from the Jewish Community Center in Overland Park, Kansas, joined the CGSC Foundation for a tour of Fort Leavenworth and CGSC. The Center’s Assistant Executive Director Gayle Levin and, Director of Jewish Experiences Jill Maidhof, along with her husband Jim, joined us for an afternoon at Fort Leavenworth.

The first stop on the tour was the grounds of Fort Leavenworth, where Foundation trustee Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Stan Cherrie explained the history of the fort. The group also enjoyed learning more about the historic homes, Otis Hall where Eisenhower had lived as a major, MacArthur’s home, and the former disciplinary barracks, among other sites.

The group’s next stop was the Lewis and Clark Center to check out the Fort Leavenworth Hall of Fame, the gallery of paintings gifted by each class, and the International Hall of Fame where they discovered the importance of the international officer program, and the relationships that are built that facilitate diplomatic efforts in the future.

The final stop on the tour was in the storage room where the CGSC keeps its gift archives. Levin and Maidhof were interested in the Israeli art that had been gifted to the College over the years. In 2018, Israel will celebrate its 70th anniversary of statehood and they would like to display some of the Israeli art at the Jewish Community Center. This request fits well with the CGSC Foundation’s “Art of War: Gifts of Peace Initiative” to engage the Kansas City community with exhibitions.

After the tour Levin said, “We are so excited about the partnership and what this event could be, especially if it not only celebrates Israel’s 70th anniversary, but also helps you advance your efforts to raise awareness for the Foundation.”
