On Aug. 23, the CGSC Foundation hosted the executive leadership team from Kansas City Southern as part of its continuing “Walk and Talk” outreach program. The “walk and talk” program focuses on educating and informing the public about Fort Leavenworth, CGSC, and the CGSC Foundation. As part of their visit, the leaders from Kansas City Southern were very interested in learning more about leader development programs at the College.

The KCS visit began with Foundation CEO Doug Tystad leading the group on a tour of the Fort Leavenworth post to talk about the post’s long history and get a closer look at some of the oldest buildings, which are also some of the oldest buildings in Kansas. They then met with Chief of Staff, Jeff Lamoe who gave a superb overview of Army leader development and the role of education in the Army’s professional development programs. This presentation led to a spirited and lengthy discussion of officer evaluations, promotion and schooling selection processes, senior leader roles in leader development, and a variety of other topics.

Mr. Bob Bayless from CGSC’s Department of Logistics And Resource Operations, gave the group a classroom demonstration and discussed the CGSC curriculum in detail. Bayless had worked for KCS initially after retirement from the military, so he was able to explain the curriculum topics in “railway” terms that made sense to them. His presentation was exceptionally well done and led to more discussion of leader development initiatives that they might use to jump-start their own programs.

Headquartered in Kansas City, Mo., KCS is a transportation holding company that has railroad investments in the U.S., Mexico and Panama.  Its primary U.S. holding is The Kansas City Southern Railway Company, serving the central and south central U.S. For more info about KCS, visit www.kcsouthern.com.
