Last week, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) announced the findings of the interagency investigation into a recent cyber incident involving federal background investigation data. OPM discovered the data had been compromised in May, after which OPM and the interagency incident response team began to analyze what data may have been stolen.
The interagency incident response team and OPM have concluded that the data breach includes 21.5 million Social Security numbers, though there is no evidence that this information has been further disseminated or that separate systems that store information regarding the health, financial, payroll and retirement records of federal personnel were impacted.
In response to the incident, OPM will be sending notification packages to the individuals affected. These packages will include information about services such as full service identity restoration support and identity theft insurance. OPM has also launched an online incident resource center to offer information regarding the OPM breach and provide materials, training, and useful information on best practices to secure data and protect against identify theft.
