The CGSC Foundation and its Simons Center hosted the third and final lecture of the 2023 Distinguished Speaker Series at the Riverfront Community Center in downtown Leavenworth, Kansas on Nov. 29, 2023. In this installment of the series, Dr. Mark Wilcox and Dr. Sean Kalic, professors at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, discussed the Simon’s Center’s Cold War Symposium and the culmination of that work in the book they co- edited, The End of the Cold War and its Aftermath. The book was published by the CGSC Foundation and its Simons Center in November 2023.

The evening began with a reception, followed by Simons Center Deputy Director John Nelson welcoming the attendees. Simons Center Director Bob Ulin also addressed the group, recognizing sponsors and speaking about future projects and inviting everyone to dinner. Toward the end of the dinner period Nelson introduced the speakers.
After introductions, Wilcox and Kalic kicked off their presentation with a summary of the Cold War Symposium and how that work jump started their work on the book. After their synopsis Nelson opened the floor to questions about the project and other facets of the Cold War attendees were interested in.
At the conclusion of the evening CGSC Foundation Interim President/CEO Lora Morgan presented both Wilcox and Kalic with small gifts in appreciation for their participation on the panel. Both editors remained on hand the rest of the evening to sign copies of the book.

Mark R. Wilcox, Ph.D., Lt. Col., U.S. Army, Ret., is a professor at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
Wilcox served as a politico-military staff officer at the U.S. European Command headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany; a Joint Chiefs of Staff representative to the United States Mission to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe in Vienna, Austria; and a security cooperation liaison officer representing U.S. Central Command in the Republic of Uzbekistan.
Sean N. Kalic, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Military History, as well as assistant dean, at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
A Cold War historian, Kalic lectures and publishes widely on topics such as the interwar period 1919-1939, the Cold War, the post-Cold War security environment, and transnational terrorism. He has presented lectures for the U.S. Naval War College, The Slovenian Armed Forces, U.S. Army Futures Command, and numerous international conferences.
This lecture was the third and last lecture of the 2023 Distinguished Speaker Series presented by the CGSC Foundation’s Simons Center for Ethical Leadership and Interagency Cooperation. The first event in the series was presented in May as a Vietnam War Commemoration Lecture with Dr. James H. Willbanks as the lecturer. The second event in October 2023 featured an update on the war in Ukraine.
The CGSC Foundation through its Simons Center conducts the Distinguished Speaker Series (DSS) program to offer extracurricular, educational lectures intended to help enrich the Command and General Staff School curriculum and provide opportunities for outreach to the public. Topics covered in the Distinguished Speaker Series of lectures span the gamut of leadership and ethics, organizational effectiveness, collaboration, as well as current events and issues in business, government and the military.
