Foundation CEO Doug Tystad explained that the CGSC Foundation mission is to support the development of military leaders of character and competence for ethical service to the nation. The Foundation accomplishes this through six specified missions, which are covered by three focus areas: 1) Scholarship – the Foundation seeks to enhance the academic experience; 2) Outreach – the Foundation works to connect Americans to the military and the College; and 3) Soldier & Family – the Foundation supports programs and activities that enrich the lives of our military and their families.

“In 2018, the Foundation has been particularly fortunate to have our family programs sponsored by three wonderful corporate sponsors: Pioneer Financial, JE Dunn, and Northrop Grumman Corporation. In addition, a number of our individual donors dedicate their donations annually to support for family programs,” said Tystad. “This year, the Foundation has been able to expand our support to the family programs and we asked for input from the CGSC leadership. One of the areas that has been consistently recommended is that the Foundation provide money for educational scholarships as a means of supporting our military spouses and children.”

For these reasons Tystad said the Foundation has chosen to partner with the Fort Leavenworth Spouse’s Club to offer scholarships to both spouses and college age family members. For many years the Spouse’s Club has had a formal application, screening, and selection process. Rather than expend resources to duplicate this effort, the Foundation has chosen to provide dedicated funding to the Spouse’s Club program.

“We are very pleased to be able to team with the Spouse’s Club in providing this assistance to our families,” said Ann Soby, the Foundation’s director of operations. “We believe that enriching the lives of our families is an important mission for the Foundation and we’re pleased that this partnership helps us support our military families.”

Tystad and Soby both noted that the Foundation also supports military families through other programs such as the youth and adult reading programs at the Ike Skelton Combined Arms Research Library, the OISS International Military Student Loan Closet, English Language courses for International Military Student family members, support to Soldier Resiliency electives at CGSC and more.
