April is Month of the Military Child. For many military families, their time at Fort Leavenworth is a respite from multiple deployments and time away from their loved ones. These challenges can be especially tough for children.
Recognizing the unique burden military dependent children bear, Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger established April as the Month of the Military Child in 1986. In the 39 years since, Month of the Military Child has grown in recognition, and is now celebrated both in military communities and the civilian world.
Since its founding in 2005, the CGSC Foundation has supported the Soldiers, families, faculty, and staff of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. Some of the Foundation’s most rewarding work is accomplished through its family programs.

Over the years, the Foundation has sponsored dozens and dozens of programs at the Ike Skelton Combined Arms Research Library at Fort Leavenworth, including children’s summer reading programs, StoryWalks®, and an annual back-to-school book giveaway.
The Foundation supports international military families as well, sponsoring the annual International Family Fishing Derby and other activities throughout the academic year.
The Foundation launched its scholarship program for the families of CGSC alumni in early 2020, and expanded the scholarship program in 2021 to include a scholarship to Park University – made possible through the Foundation’s partnership with Park. The program expanded again in 2023 with the Colonel Stephen E. ‘Brownie’ Brown Scholarship. Eight $500-$5,000 scholarships were awarded in 2024. The 2025 scholarship recipients will be announced later this month.

The CGSC Foundation would like to thank the sponsors of the 2025 children’s literacy programs, including The Kansas City Royals Foundation, Rainy Day Books, Penworthy Company, and Arcadia Publishing. The CGSC Foundation would also like to thank everyone who contributed to the scholarship program, including alumni association members and regular donors.
